As Mayor it gives me great pleasure to welcome you, one and all, to our small friendly moorland town. It is a great place to live, work and to visit.
You will find Camelford on the A39 (Atlantic Highway) half-way between the moors and the coast of North Cornwall, nestling astride the River Camel.
2009 will see us celebrating a number of events during June and July* to commemorate the 750th anniversary of Camelford’s Royal Charter, granted by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, brother to King Henry III. This gave the community the right to hold a weekly market and a 3 day annual fair. Later in the year we also invite you to our traditional Carnival (held on the last Saturday in October)* and our annual Fireworks display and switch-on of the Christmas Lights (both take place on the first Saturday in December)*.
Camelford thrived for many years but eventually, in the 18th Century, it was by-passed by a toll road across Bodmin Moor (now the A30) and for a time it stagnated. (More of the history of Camelford is provided in this website).
Camelford today however boasts a vibrant community with many social activities and gatherings (too numerous to list here). The town has managed to retain a good selection of family-run businesses and small shops selling local produce as well as some of the national high street names.
