The building was originally erected in 1917 as a Drill Hall at a time when Camelford was a close linked community creating its own activities and community organisations to add to the family gatherings and celebrations of the day.
As the Community became larger and customs changed the building became a typical Village Hall supported by the residents and maintained by the goodwill and efforts of a number of dedicated residents.
As the size of Camelford increased so did the use of the building and in the late 1960’s it was felt that the ownership and operation of the Hall needed to have a more formal structure.
In 1970 a number of residents, showing considerable foresight, made contributions to an unsecured loan of £2,300 to enable the Hall to be transferred from the then Rural District Council of Camelford to be held in Trust on behalf of the residents to the Camelford Town Council. It was some years before sufficient fund were accumulated from activities at the Hall to enable the loans to be repaid.
The transfer was achieved by the enactment on 6th May 1970 of a Declaration of Trust by the Camelford Town Council.
This Declaration also achieved Charity Status (Reg. No. 300524) for the Hall and included the acknowledgement of the Town Council that it ‘would stand possessed of the property’ (Para 2) and for the ‘purposes of a village hall for the use of the inhabitants of the Parish of Camelford…..’ (Clause1).
