It is now some time since the final event of the Charter celebrations that ran from 12 June until 12 July 2009 – an appropriate distance from which to reflect on the event as a whole and its successes and problems on the way.
On 19 June 2008, at the meeting of Camelford Town Council, Joanna Raymond-Barker gave a presentation on the history of the Camelford Charter and its 750th anniversary in 2009. This presentation was to start a series of events which would culminate in the Charter celebrations.
For some time Camelford Association of Residents, as part of its fundraising, had wanted to host a mediaeval banquet and this seemed the ideal opportunity. Happily, 12 June 2009 fell on a Friday, and within days we had booked Camelford Hall for the purpose, on the actual date the Charter had been signed by King Henry III, 750 years earlier.
The Residents’ Association then started to form a committee and wrote to all organisations in the town asking for input, ideas and support. We were given all in abundance and at its meeting of 6 August 2008 Camelford Town Council became our partners in Camelford Charter 750 and at its October 2008 meeting voted to underwrite the celebrations to the value of £5000, should it be needed. This, together with a talented team* and detailed budget, gave us a very solid base not only to organise events but also to apply for grant funding.
This we did between late October and late November and by Christmas 2008 we had been awarded sufficient funds to pay for all the events we were planning. This included the funds raised and to be raised by Camelford Association of Residents over its three fundraising supper evenings and quiz nights, and many local contributions.
